Shangri-La, My Paradise On The Water!

- Allen Cox – Shangri-la
Hello there from Allen Cox. Let me tell you a little bit about my life and where I live..on a boat! I love my boat, Yacht Shangri-La. Really I do!. But, she is so much work to keep her looking beautiful. I suppose that’s the same for any woman as she gets older, or so my female friends tell me.
Anyway, back to my older woman. She’s wooden, and, as all boat owners know, wood means constant work. At the moment, I am busy rubbing down all the wood on the deck and varnishing. It has to be done every year as the sun really takes its toll on the wood. I have to admit, I do have a little help. That’s the best part about being the Captain.
I’m anchored off in a beautiful bay, and it’s so peaceful, that is, until I turn on the sander. Goats come down the mountain side to graze, fish are swimming around the boat, and friends come over in their boats to commiserate with all the work I still have to do, whilst enjoying a coffee or beer on my deck.
What I really want to do is go and lay up on the sun deck with my book, but my crew Jo tells me it’s best to just get it finished before it get too hot. She’s right, so it’s back to the sanding.
Shangri-La is also my home and has been for many a year. Jo asked me the other day, after I had been complaining about the constant upkeep, why didn’t I sell her and buy myself a villa . My answer was that I love living on a boat, and having the freedom to change the view from my cabin whenever I feel like it. Also, as much as it’s hard work, I would hate to have nothing physically do every day.
I’m lucky as the boat is really spacious and even boasts a full size bath off the master cabin, so I lack none of the comforts my friends enjoy in their homes. I can play my music as loud as I want when there are no other boats around, which is great as I really enjoy volume. I also have surround sound for my TV and love that loud like in the theaters, to get in the mood of the film. In fact, I would be hopeless living on land, as I would always be upsetting my neighbors by being too noisy.
So, it’s back to the sander for me, but I will sneak up to the sun deck later with a glass of beer and my book!
